Tips for Educating Students
We encourage students in AAA 090 to share about themselves and their past which can bring up incidents related to Title IX that we are required to report. To educate your students so that they can make the decision on what they reveal about themselves, here are some tips.
- Point out the Title IX statement within the syllabus and explain your role in reporting. Explain how the college desires to make sure that students have received the support and resources that they need and that measures are taken to ensure the students safety. The intention is to support the student so that they can be successful.
- Before an assignment that it might be more relevant to share about themselves (e.g. certain ice-breakers, vision board, career research essay, etc.), remind students of your role as a mandatory reporter of Title IX incidents.
Warning:
- Do not friend any student on social media such as Facebook. Information is often shared through social media and you might be setting yourself up to be required to report it.
How to Approach Students Before Making a Report
Do not let the student find out that they have been reported by the conduct officers. Rather have a conversation with the them prior to reporting it so they know what is going to happen.
- Thank them for sharing the information with me, empathize with the things they've been through.
- Acknowledge how hard they are working to make significant changes in their life.
- Explain that you're obligated to share any information of a sexual assault or DV that students have disclosed to you, to the Title IX officer.
- Reaffirm the sole purposes of reporting this info is to make sure they are supported and have all of the resources that are available to them, also to ensure their safety.
- Explain the process ("I report, they will get a call from a title IX officer, probably Stephanie, they will ask them if they are okay and need anything, then in most cases that's it.")
- Reassure them they are not in trouble, and we are only trying to help them be successful in college.
- Offer to attend the meeting with them if they are nervous or uncomfortable.
