Arranging a Substitute & Canceling Class

When a 3-credit class is scheduled 75 minutes or less, there is no formal break time included and all class sessions and time are needed to achieve the full amount of contact hours.  If you have a planned or unplanned absence, below are options for finding a substitute to teach a course session.

1st:  Use sub matrix and contact sheet to ask other AAA instructors.  Ideally you can find another AAA instructor who also needs a substitute and reciprocate the help.  You might start asking instructors who teach on your campus, at similar times (day vs. evening) or that you know. When you have found someone, who can substitute your course, please email department chair, Rebecca Sailor rebecca.sailor@aims.edu with the specifics of your arrangement, prior to the missed class session.

2nd:  Arrange a guest speaker that is a campus employee and comfortable handling your class without you.  This might be another Aims instructor, advisor, career advisor, etc.  You might need to rearrange the class schedule to make it make sense with the unit/chapter. When you have found someone, who can substitute your course, please email department chair, Rebecca Sailor rebecca.sailor@aims.edu with the specifics of your arrangement, prior to the missed class session.

3rd:  If you have exhausted all possibilities finding a substitute on your own, or if this is an emergency, you will need to contact department chair, Rebecca Sailor to assist you with getting class coverage at 970-396-1888.

Note about Canceling Class:  The AAA department has a “Don’t Cancel Class Policy”. Canceling class should only be used when there is little notice due to sudden illness, family emergency, etc. and a substitute cannot be arranged.  In those cases, you must inform the department chair, Rebecca Sailor rebecca.sailor@aims.edu or 970-396-1888 prior to cancelling class and the work that you will be assigning to make up for the missed contact hours (e.g. assignment, online video, student lingo video www.studentlingo.com/aims, etc.).
