Culturally Responsive Teaching

Aims Diversity Statement
Aims Community College recognizes and celebrates diversity in society......We must nurture and respect differences and appreciate the multitude of perspectives resulting from our differences. We must strive to provide an environment that is enriching to all. Along with recognizing differences, understanding and appreciating our shared humanity allows us to work and learn in an atmosphere where all are welcome and valued.

Conceptual Foundations for Success Validation Theory (Knowledge)
"Success appears to be contingent on whether faculty and staff can validate students in an academic or interpersonal way." (Rendón, 1994, 2002)
  • Validate students as learners when participate during class (help them see that you have a positive view of their intelligence); co-construct knowledge with students
Ideas for Creating Safe Classrooms

Low Effort:
  • Arrange classrooms in a way that encourages interaction
  • Validate students’ contributions when sharing a perspective as a member of an historically marginalized group
Medium Effort:
  • Recognize your own biases…spend some time analyzing how these biases have impacted your behavior
High Effort:
  • Review your course (content, activities, handouts, etc). Ask: Have I represented the perspectives of diverse groups?
Videos
Immaculate perception: Jerry Kang https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VGbwNI6Ssk
Do you discriminate? UCLA law professor Jerry Kang exposes the phenomenon of automatic processing and how it relates to explicit and implicit bias. Decades of research shows that attitudes and stereotypes influence how we see and behave. Despite our best efforts, are we all under the sway of "the rightness of whiteness?" And is there evidence showing that these biases can be reduced -- at least temporarily? Using humor and audience participation, Kang challenges our assumptions while shifting our perceptions of at least one Asian male.
